Getting to Glasgow

Flights and connections

Glasgow has 2 international airports: Glasgow (GLA and Prestwick (EGPK, PIK) with direct flights to over 57 destinations including all London airports, the USA, Canada, major European airports and Dubai.

Edinburgh Airport is around a 1-hour journey away as well. This may be a cheaper option than flying into Glasgow for some attendees. There is a frequent and direct megabus service between Edinburgh airport and Glasgow city centre. There are also less direct routes available via train (see below)

  • Click here for more information about the bus service direct from Edinburgh airport.

There are usually many taxis available at the exits of all airports, although these are often the quickest way of reaching Glasgow’s city centre, it will likely be the most expensive option. Uber does operate in Glasgow as a slightly cheaper alternative.

Trains

Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city with excellent transport links to the rest of the country as well as a direct rail link to the centre of London. There are multiple train operators that travel the length of the UK, so for trains going to and from England, please consult the comparison website Trainline. This will show you all the trains running between 2 places (e.g. London to Glasgow).

  • Note that prices do fluctuate depending on when you book and who you book with, always try to book as early as possible, and directly from the provider’s website.

There is only one train operator for the whole of Scotland (Scotrail), so for all rail travel within Scotland, please consult the Scotrail website or app (Trainline will also work). Glasgow has 2 main train stations in the city centre – Central and Queen Street. However, these are both about a 45-minute walk from the conference venue. The closest railway station to the venue is Partick Station (about a 20-minute walk).

Subway

The venue is about a 3 minutes’ walk from Hillhead Subway station, and so from the city centre/main train stations, you could get to and from the venue quickly by taking a short ride (10 minutes or less) or walk (about 35 minute). The Glasgow Subway is known fondly as the ‘clockwork orange’ – it is safe and easy, having only two tracks – clockwise and anticlockwise. Both serve all stations so you can’t get lost! A single journey ticket currently costs £1.80.

Bus

There are also buses that run between all the major cities in Scotland, and tend to be cheaper than trains, although the journey times are longer. There are multiple companies that operate main routes so sites like Trainline above or CheckMyBus are helpful to identify the journey you want. Glasgow’s Buchanan bus station is located close to the Queen Street rail station, and so is similarly a 45-minute walk away from the venue.

  • Note that prices do fluctuate depending on when you book and who you book with, always try to book as early as possible, and directly from the provider’s website. You can also pay as you enter the bus on almost all journeys.

See the Accommodation page for information on hotels.

See the Venue page for information and exact location of the conference venue.
